Fresno’s High-Speed Rail Gets $20M in Funding

The high-speed rail in Fresno has been in development for a very long time… So long in fact, that many were unsure that it was still in development. However, Fresno has recently received $20 million in funding for the project. The Federal Railroad Administration and the California High-Speed Rail Authority announced that this project was getting this funding from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program.

What This Means for Fresno

This project, along with other development projects, will be a great addition to the plans for restoring Downtown Fresno. The new railway will restore the current historic passenger rail depot building Downtown, and it will create park and plaza spaces in its early stages of development. There are also plans to include structures for zero-emissions vehicles in areas that have been historically disadvantaged. The rail depot will also include other important developments for downtown including accessibility upgrades, seismic reinforcement, and other amenities including:

  • Electric vehicle charging stations
  • Solar powered generation
  • Bicycle and scooter parking
  • Tree, canopy, and other shade structures
  • Improved stormwater management
  • Space for public activities
  • Leasing opportunities
  • Improved fencing and security

Learn More About The High-Speed Rail Project

If you want to learn more about this project, you can visit the High-Speed Rail Authority’s website, or download the Station District Master Plan for more information. We are still waiting for more updates to this project, but predict that we will get another one in the near future now that the project has acquired this funding. Though we still won’t see the railway itself for quite a while, knowing that it’s still in the works is great news for Fresnans.
